I love u mainly used in western country, people use I love u to any of their love one - Friends, family, lovers...Just to express out the love. Widely used...

我爱你 mainly used in eastern country, people use it to the one that they really mean to 爱... Really serious 爱... Normally a loyal person who really understand the words wouldn't have said 我爱你 to more than 10 person in their life...

Thats the different..I love u used frequently but 我爱你 used barely. 1 of the reason is because Asian are shy...wouldn't dare to express out the feeling to someone that they don't really trust or know....
